The Guitar is a fascinating instrument. It is as comfortable being used solo as in a group. It's a part of many favorite music groups. No wonder so many young children want to learn to play the guitar. However, it is not the easiest instrument to teach to young children because of the way the notes are organized on its neck. The high notes are on the bottom when the guitar is held in playing position; each string goes from the open note to higher notes as the finger is moved down toward the body of the guitar. It is easy to understand why a child may become easily confused.

Chord positions can be taught and committed to memory allowing youngesters to strum the instrument successfully, but this is not totally satisfactory since playing only chords does not allow the child to play the melody of their favorite songs. To successfully play and enjoy a guitar, the student should learn the notes, preferably before chords.

Animal Notes™ have been used to arrange the music in this book so a young student can easily recognize the letter being studied. The animals notes are located appropriately on the staff. A chart is included on each page showing the notes being studied and used in each song.

After learning the notes featured in this book, the other general song books inclued in this series of study can be used to further strengthen the child's ability in note reading. The flash card set and the word clues suggested for each note's location on the Grand Staff help the student make a successful transition to standard note reading.
