About

Welcome to Piano4kids blog dedicated to teaching young children to play the piano. Here you will find a lot of great ideas on how teach kids the basics of music including note reading, timing, etc.

I started teaching piano 38 years ago  when a friend asked me to teach her young daughter (I was over 21 at the time, but I’m not telling how far).  It was as much of a learning experience for me as for my student.  Nancy always wanted to know why or the history of all elements of what she was being taught.  I really wanted to do a good job so I spent hours at the college library seeking answers to her questions; then figuring out ways to put some of the advanced information on a child’s level of understanding.  This small beginning would grow into a life time of work that I have loved.  Each child I teach is a joy as well as a challenge to me.

I had taken piano lessons most of my childhood, but when it came time to go to college I chose to study education instead of music.  Though I have never used my degree to teach in a school, I have used it every time I sit by a student at the piano. I have taught as many as 40 individual students in a week, though I do not carry as heavy a load at this time.

It is such a joy to share my teaching experiences with you on this site.  I hope you visit it often.
